Dunstanbargh Castle

Massive, MASSIVE WELL DONE to everyone who took part in, helped, supported and had anything to do with this AMAZING Event. YOU SMASHED IT. The Kingdom of Northumbria Ultra is a trail run (54km or 27km distance choice) which runs down the coast of Northumberland.

With some of the most stunning coastal views, the runners are also spoilt with Castles and rolling landscapes. The Kingdom of Northumbria Ultra report is my humble view of the events yesterday.

An early start for some who were collected at Druridge Bay for coach transfer to the start. All accounts said it was a fab atmosphere. The 8 am start at Bamburgh (with the Castle in view) was greeted with a beautiful sunrise and bright if a touch chilly conditions. Just about right for running the gentle sea breeze helped keep the runners cool. Heading South along the coast line the runners make their way to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. An idyllic village with a warm welcome. From there onto Craster and a beautiful round view of Dunstanburgh Castle. A beautiful property maintained by the National Trust and well worth a visit.

Further down the coast to Boulmer, another beautifully welcoming town. A well stocked cheap point and some more banging views across the beach to the sea. Boulmer was the half way point and also marked the start of the 27km distance at 10am.

Then on through Alnmouth where there’s a mixture of path and trail to run along very close to the sea. A truly beautiful spot especially on a wonderful spring morning. Plenty of volunteer marshals helping you along.

Then on past Warkworth Beach and through Warkworth past another castle you run along the River Coquet and into Amble before arriving at Druridge Bay. One runner did say it was ‘hillier and trailier’ than last year but a beautiful Ultra run it certainly is.

Finishing at Druridge Bay after a quick lap of the lake you see a wonderous flood of emotions which is an honour to capture in pictures. Personal bests, First time, With friends and supported by family there’s a magnificent sense of achievement and satisfaction. You Did It!

All in All a FANTASTIC DAY. Great organisation from start to finish, Amazing support from ther runners family and friends. The Marshals and volunteers helped keep everyone on track even in the fast vanishing evening light. And last but not least, HUGE THANK YOU to Jonny and Paul who helped me cover the 55km course and get the photos for your all to enjoy.
